The Motorcycle Workshop

(daytime course, open to 11 – 19 year olds, accreditation only available to those aged 14+)

Enables a young person to gain a qualification and practical experience in motorcycle maintenance and repair, as well as learn off road motorbiking skills.

We have years of experience of delivering this programme to schools, local authorities, pupil referral units, youth services and clubs, the police force, youth offending teams and social services.

Members attend one day a week from 10am to 3pm.

Courses are available for either 12 weeks (an academic term), 36 weeks (an academic year) or 72 weeks (two academics years).

Courses are run out of the Archway Project in Thamesmead and can also be delivered at various sites across London. We can utilise your buildings and grounds, such as school halls, playgrounds, car parks and small units.

Description

Delivered by qualified staff and accredited by the Open College Network, course members can gain a qualification in motorcycle mechanics comparable to an NVQ level one. The Motorcycle Workshop Programme is suitable for young people who may have some difficulty with standard learning practices or literacy and numeracy skills.

In addition to learning theory in a classroom environment, young people are taught practical mechanics in a workshop and help to maintain our fleet of motorbikes that are used during off road riding trips. Young people learn a range of skills from carrying out simple repairs through to complete engine rebuilds.

Every young person goes on a minimum of six riding trips a year, two per term, as a reward for good attendance, effort and behaviour. Young people are taught to ride at a pace that is both safe and achievable. Overcoming the challenges presented whilst riding very often raises a young person’s self esteem and confidence.

Young people attending the Motorcycle Workshop course also have access to a range of other activities that include:

  • The Healthy Eating Club
  • The Positive Role Models Scheme
  • Residential Camping Trips
  • The Photography Club
  • Youth Endurance Challenges (competitive races)

Community Workshop

(Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings)

Young people join their peers in a youth club setting where they can learn mechanics in a workshop and off road motorbiking skills, use computers and hang out with friends and staff over a cup of tea.

The Community Workshop has been running for 15 years out of the Archway Project in Thamesmead.

Courses run during term time, every:
Tuesday (open to 11 to 14 year olds, 5pm – 7pm)
Wednesday (open to 14 to 19 year olds, 6pm – 8.30pm)
Thursday (open to 14 to 19 year olds, 5pm – 7.30pm)

Anyone living in the London boroughs of Greenwich and Bexley can apply to become a member. Download the membership form here.

Description

An informal and relaxed session that focuses on motorcycle maintenance and repair where young people can learn mechanics hands on in the workshop. Young people learn a range of skills from carrying out simple repairs through to complete engine rebuilds.

After five sessions in the workshop, members are rewarded with a day’s off road motorbiking. Young people are taught to ride at a pace that is both safe and achievable. Overcoming the challenges presented whilst riding very often raises a young person’s self esteem and confidence.

Young people attending the Motorcycle Workshop course also have access to a range of other activities that include:

  • The Positive Role Models Scheme
  • Residential Camping Trips
  • The Photography Club
  • Youth Endurance Challenges (competitive races)

The Healthy Eating Club

An integral part of the day at the Archway Project that teaches young people about cooking, budgeting and healthy eating. A member of staff and up to three young people plan and cook lunch for the group, which is often made up of 10 people or more. All members and staff contribute £1.50 each. The chefs then go shopping for the ingredients and cook a lovely meal.

Positive Role Models

The Archway Project organises motorsport day trips for members to events in the UK and abroad so that they can watch their sporting heroes in action. We have taken groups to the Weston Beach Race, British Motocross Grand Prix and the International Trails Championship to name just a few.

Residential Camping Trips

On residential camping trips, members are given the opportunity to practice their off road motorbiking skills on a variety of terrain and learn new techniques. Young people also maintain the fleet of the bikes in a makeshift workshop tent and cook in the outdoors. Evenings are spent talking (and snoozing) around a camp fire.

The Photography Club

Members at the Archway Project have access to a range of digital cameras to enable them to learn basic photography skills. Young people often take pictures on riding trips and at motorsport events. The best picture of the month is framed and exhibited at the Archway Project, adding to the collection.

Youth Endurance Challenges (competitive races)

The Youth Endurance Challenge is a competition race that has been created by the Archway Project. It encourages young people to work as a team as well as develop their riding ability and mechanical skills. In partnership with similar projects across London, staff and young people themselves share the duties of organising the event. The challenge is the first kind of competitive riding many of the young people experience.
